What Is a Mullet?

Mullet wigTo start with, the plain definition we can say is that a mullet is a hairstyle combining short hair (in the front) with long hair (in the back). For many people, however, the mullet has become more than a hairstyle. Those still wearing a mullet today have come to believe that, in spite of people’s criticism, the mullet is the best hairstyle ever. The mullet is part of their personality, part of who they are and they want to be.

Mullets have been around since antique times. The earliest mullets are said to have been worn by the Normans, but even farther in time, antique Egyptians had headpieces resembling the mullet style. Along time many people may have tried this haircut, but the style needed David Bowie to have it become famous. The haircut promoted by Bowie in the ‘70s was a combination between three haircuts, put together by his wife in a futurist, rebel and shocking hairstyle. The mullet was a huge hit and the rock world was taken by storm by the new hairstyle.

Walking on the same line, major rock stars and actors in the 80′s had embraced the new and crazy style. Among the most famous singers wearing a mullet at some point in their lives we can mention are Michel Bolton, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney and Bono (U2).

The acting world had its mullet wearers too. Kurt Russell, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sylvester Stallone, Kevin Costner and Patrick Swayze have started a new trend in mullets: the action mullet. What was so special about it? Most action actors had one and it was nice to see their hair flipping backwards when chasing the bad guys, adding more suspense to the entire scene. Even Captain Planet from the cartoon series had a mullet, so you can imagine why children were so crazy about this haircut.

While the glorious era of the mullets has gone, they are still great for evoking memories of the good old times. Thus, if you plan in dressing up as a ‘80s rock star, redneck or movie actor make sure your mullet wig is in perfectly good (or bad) style!
